This Weekend Was…

November 23, 2015

This weekend we had some much-needed downtime, which included a couple quiet evenings at home and dinner with just the two of us. Amidst the chaos of having a 6 month old, living with in-laws, working, and trying to keep up with life in general, it was so nice to have a few quiet hours to ourselves to reconnect and just take a breath.

Some of my favorite moments this weekend involved listening to podcasts while switching between making a batch of mochas on the stove and stirring a big batch of babyfood to freeze for Prim. (We listened to The Message and Limetown, if you’re curious.)

We managed to finish up a small portion of our Christmas shopping, thanks to the Old Navy friends and family sale. (Um 50% the entire store? Yes please.) And we managed to take photos for our Christmas card at Alexis’ house. (I’ve never sent Christmas cards out, so the fact that we actually got our act together and managed to get photos together before Thanksgiving is kind of a miracle.)

I absolutely love the way the photos turned out (thanks in large part to the fact that this husband of mine is quite adorable, and Prim, well, I’m obviously biased, but I can’t even handle how cute she is.)

Here are a few photos that didn’t make the cut for the card: IMG_7236^^Nothing cuter than a little baby belly, am I right?^^

^^I mean, heart: melted.^^

I hope your weekend was relaxing and full of cheer.

PS: Prim’s cute hat, sweater, and moccasins are currently available at BabyGap. Onesie is from Old Navy, and polka dot pants are from BabyGap, but were purchased on super sale a long time ago when I was pregnant.

The New Normal

This weekend was, probably by most people’s standards, really boring. I taught class on Saturday morning and the rest of the day was spent running a few errands before returning home for the evening.

It’s amazing how much of a production it is to get out of the house just to run to Starbucks and Banana Republic now. It’s this 20-minute dance of getting Prim changed, fed, the diaper bag together, the stroller into the car, the carseat moved from one car to the other, and, inevitably, at least one or two trips back into the house to grab something (“Should I bring the wrap? Did you grab the bag of stuff to return? Why am I not wearing shoes?”)

But even though this would probably drive non-parents crazy, I think it’s kind of the best.

Yes, everything is a little bit harder and more complicated with a baby, but I think it’s also way more fun. I mean, watching KC carry Prim around on his shoulders (she likes to grab onto his hair and hold on so tight!) is like all the heart-eye emojis ever.

And our new Saturday nights which involve a pretty long bedtime routine followed by a quiet evening with something simple made for dinner and maybe half a beer unwinding with one of our favorite shows — it’s pretty great. IMG_7027

It’s certainly no night out at a fancy restaurant or anything, but I think there will be plenty of time for nights like that later. For now I’m happy just watching KC play with Prim on the floor while she squeals and laughs as she tries to convince Penny to come within reach.

Oh yeah, AND we started Prim on solids this weekend, which was so funny and adorable. Pictures of that are coming up tomorrow!

Weekend Things

March 18, 2015

I realize that it’s Wednesday now, so I’m a little late in talking about last weekend.  But I’ve been a little bit overwhelmed by the exhaustion of being 7 1/2 months pregnant, so I’m just gonna let this one slide (hopefully you will too).

This weekend we went to IKEA on Friday night to pick up a few odds and ends.  We moved a large picture from our dining room into our bedroom, so the huge blank wall had been staring at me for a week, begging to be filled up by something.  I don’t know if any of you have looked into large photographs or prints, but man are they pricey.  We ended up blowing up a couple photographs we already had and framing them in IKEA frames.  The result was both inexpensive and awesome — I’ll post about it next week.

On Saturday we decided to try out Timeless Coffee.  Even though everything is vegan, I have to say that my almond milk mocha was actually quite tasty.

KC got the cold-brew coffee, which was so delicious, but sadly doesn’t come in decaf.  I’m definitely missing my favorite cold brew these days (I know caffeine is allowed during pregnancy, but I haven’t had caffeine in over a year so it makes me feel like I’m on meth when I have it — or, what I assume being on meth feels like.  Y’know, like you could really go to town on some grout lines if someone handed you a toothbrush.)

After our coffee outing, KC got to work on some house projects while I relaxed on the couch (like I said, I’m pretty sure he’s having some sympathy nesting pains these days).  It was pretty hot out on Saturday, so I stuffed my 30 week belly into some cutoffs, because I have no shame, even with this giant basketball belly:

We headed down to my parents’ house that night because one of my showers was the next day.  My mom, sister and grandma threw the shower, and it was pretty freaking amazing.  I couldn’t really imagine a better day.  And just check out this amazing diaper cake that my aunt made:

Baby Deatsch is really feeling the love already.  She is one lucky lady to have all these wonderful women in her life! 🙂

After we got home from the shower, we went through our gifts and KC decided to take the baby carrier for a spin:

That’s the Ergo 360 with 11 1/2 pounds of adorableness inside.  And by the way, Penny did not mind being the guinea pig one bit for the trial run.

I have a feeling that Penny is going to have a wee bit of jealousy when this little peanut arrives!

Weekend Things

March 9, 2015

This weekend we went out for sushi (twice!) because I was craving it (calm down, I get the cooked rolls), got our Tdap shots (my arm is still a little sore), I spent some quality time with the animals after teaching on Saturday morning (Seuss was thrilled to be hanging out with Penny and me):

animals

seriously, get me out of here.

We took a long walk with Penny on Sunday, which pretty much exhausted me (carrying this wee bairn around is no joke these days), so Penny and I recovered on the couch afterwards:

The nesting bug seems to have hit KC as well, as he spent a lot of the weekend tackling projects around the house, getting things prepped for a little lady’s arrival — he mounted 2 TVs, rearranged the bedroom to fit our new mini crib, hung up a few things in the nursery, and painted the ceiling downstairs — something we’ve been meaning to tackle since last June…

Our little house is coming together and looking more and more baby-ready.  I can’t wait to show you the nursery once it’s all (or mostly) finished!

Little Room Redo

November 5, 2014

We have a little room off our basement laundry/family room that we’ve used as an office, workout room, man cave… many things.  Unfortunately, after we redid the laundry room, the little room became kind of a de-facto storage space — housing a lot of the things that used to be kept in the basement.

basementWe decided to clean out the space, take the stuff off the walls, and add a fresh coat of paint.  I liked the green walls ok, but they needed some patching and we didn’t have the original paint color to touch up, so we opted for a brand new color to reinvent things a little.

basement 1

basement 4I chose Glidden Silver Birch with an eggshell finish– a super light gray with a beige undertone.  (Which is now my most favorite color for interiors at the moment.)

A little note about choosing gray paint — there is no “true gray,” which makes choosing a gray paint color really difficult.  All grays have an undertone to them — the most common undertones being blue, purple, green and beige.  If you gather up a bunch of gray paint chips and hold them up in the space you’re planning to paint, you’ll see the undertone pretty clearly.  A gray that you were sure was “the one” at the store can suddenly be OMGPURPLE in the space you’re planning to paint.  Lesson: paint chips are your friend.  Gather up a lot of them and look at them in multiple spots in the space you’re planning to paint before you go ahead and buy that gallon.

Anyhoo, here’s the space with the freshly painted gray walls:

basement 5basement 6Nice right?  (It looks awesome in person, if I do say so myself.)

However, despite the amazingness of Glidden Silver Birch, it couldn’t really detract from the glaringly obvious problem of the space:

basement 7Oh hey, hideous painted floors.

floor 1

Whoever had owned the space before us decided to paint the floor in here; and from the looks of it, they also decided to paint without a drop cloth and generally wreck the space while the floor was still wet.

Because, why not?

I approached KC about re-painting the floor, but he had a better idea: installing a floating laminate floor.

floor 2We found our flooring on sale at Costco.  It was $25/box and we ended up buying 4 boxes to cover the 6′ x 12′ space (we have most of one box left over).

The flooring was awesome because it came with all the sound proofing already attached to the planks.  (With a lot of laminate flooring, you generally have to buy sheets of soundproofing material that lays down first, then lay the boards over that.)

These are snap-together flooring pieces that you cut to fit with a circular saw.  Word to the wise: make sure you buy the correct saw blade for cutting laminate.  We bought a cheaper blade first and basically burned through it (literally) and had to go back and buy another one in order to finish the room.

KC was in charge of the flooring project, so I sadly don’t have a lot of real-world tips and advice for you.  (Aside from get yourself an awesome husband.  It really pays off.)

KC figured out how to lay the flooring by watching tutorials on YouTube (ah, the power of the internet).

floorKC installed the flooring over the course of a single day, and finished up the edges the next night by installing white quarter-rounds around the edges to match the white baseboards (since there’s a little gap between the boards and the edge of the wall):

floor 3Um, a bit of an improvement, no?

I’ll have more pictures of the finished space up next week!
