img_8114This weekend was the long-awaited lull after the craziness of the past two weeks. In the last two weeks I gave notice at my job, found out that the movers were coming to pack and ship all of our stuff to the Netherlands with five days notice (yayyyy…), got a terrible cold that hung on for dear life, almost got a speeding ticket, got a fix-it ticket instead, and celebrated my birthday.

All of this + my chronic sleep-deprivation amounted to my brain being stressed out beyond belief.

Now that our stuff has been packed and is on some ship sailing to the Netherlands, there’s a lot less to worry about. And I’m sure that tying up work over the next couple of weeks will be stressful, but at least I won’t be fighting a cold while attempting to organize and decide on everything we need to have in the Netherlands for the next two years of our life, while simultaneously ensuring that it will all somehow fit into ten square meters. img_8112Poor P seems to have gotten my cold, which made this weekend a little less than ideal, but luckily she was still in pretty good spirits, for the most part. img_8113And what about P’s summery outfit that I just couldn’t resist, even though it’s totally impractical for Amsterdam? Too cute for words! I can’t get enough of those cute long legs of hers.

I hope your weekend was full of sleeping in, delicious meals, and plenty of TV binge-watching.

img_7504This weekend we spent some time down at my parents’ house in San Jose. On Saturday we headed to Vasona park with my mom, sister Alexis and her family to see the ducks and enjoy the nice weather. Apparently you can’t feed the ducks anymore (when we were kids you could show up with a loaf of Wonder bread and watch the ducks gobble up the pieces), but it was still fun to watch the birds circle around in the water and quack noisily.

img_7508img_7500While we were at the park we headed over to Oak Meadow to ride the train with the kiddos. Unfortunately we managed to miss the last ride by a matter of minutes, but luckily the carousel was still running. My mom bought us all tickets and we loaded up the kiddos onto horses side by side. Prim wasn’t super excited about the ride, but she did just sit quietly taking it all in which was pretty interesting since it was really loud and kind of overwhelming, which for most little kids is a recipe for tears, usually.

img_7530img_7529We headed back home that night after Prim had dinner and vegged out on the couch.

On Sunday we ambitiously decided to go to brunch with Prim. We haven’t been out for brunch with her since she was maybe 2 or 3 months old and would generally fall asleep when we were out, so I knew we were kind of taking a gamble going out with her during waking hours. Plus she’s teething right now (does it ever end??) and was not in the best spirits anyway.

We ended up going anyway, and managed to make it through our meal (though we both took turns taking Prim outside to walk her around while waiting for our food to arrive). It certainly could have been worse, but it wasn’t exactly the fun and relaxing brunch I was envisioning.

After brunch we headed to a local park so Prim could use the baby swings again.

img_7521And yes, she did keep getting called “he” and “him” while we were out because of her outfit, but I thought it was cute and the whole “baby gender confusion” thing really seems to bother other people a lot more than it bothers me.

After all that hard work it was time for naps all around (this is KC ignoring the terrible chick flick I was watching while Prim napped, and Penny just finds any opportunity to cuddle, of course.)img_7527All in all it was a great way to spend the weekend.

Swings!

February 29, 2016

img_7422The weekend before last we took a trip to a local park and Prim had her first experience with the swings. And actually, now that I think about it, this was her first experience with a swing, period, since we don’t own a baby swing.

I wasn’t really sure how Prim would like the swing, given that she’s still so little, but she absolutely loved it. It was so sweet watching her smile so big as KC would push her just a little bit higher, and I have pictures and video of her clapping as she swings because she was so happy.

img_7442I’m not sure exactly how long Prim was hanging out in the swing, but it seemed like she would have happily stayed there all day if we’d given her the option.

It’s kind of funny the things that become “weekend-worthy” once you have a baby. Pre-Prim, the idea of hanging out at a kids park (sans keg and slosh ball accoutrement, with actual children) would have been like, uhhhh no thank you. Not only because it’s a little creepy to just go hang out at a playground without a child accompanying you, but because weekends were previously reserved for sleeping late, having long lunches out at a restaurant, drinking with friends, and jetting off on the occasional weekend getaway. And I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a small part of me that misses all of that just a little bit, but that part is outweighed so heavily now by how amazing it is to watch Prim grow and experience life.

I suspect that the days of leisurely weekends will return… eventually. But for now, I can’t think of anything better than spending the day with this little one and her Daddy.

This Weekend Was

img_7266How was your Valentine’s Day? I hope it was very smoochy and full of chocolate.

Ours was very low-key (just how I like it!). On Saturday night I made dinner for the two of us (I made steak and potatoes from this recipe, with this salad, in case you’re curious). We sat around eating and drinking wine, and it was almost like the old days, until Prim woke up at 11pm and refused to go back to sleep, which meant that the three of us had a little hour and a half pow wow in her room reading stories together until she finally decided she was tired again. It’s almost like that little lady knew that we were having a little celebration and she just couldn’t stand not being a part of it (and I have to admit that there’s a part of me that really didn’t mind a bit, because the three of us curled up together on the tiny twin bed in her room, reading story after story and singing songs, was kind of the best thing ever.)

On Sunday, actual Valentine’s Day, KC let me sleep in until 10am (!) which was the BEST present (because going to bed at 12:30am and being woken up again at 4am and 6:45am does not a rested mama make!) I got up in time to get Prim down for her first nap and then made pancakes for KC and I to have for breakfast.

We don’t usually do gifts for Valentine’s Day (it’s flowers and champagne, if anything), but here’s how I know that KC and I have been together a loooong time and are totally on the same wavelength — we each bought three valentine’s cards for each other this year. One card for each other, one for Prim, and one for the other person from Prim. I mean, we didn’t even talk about this ahead of time or anything.

KC’s cards to me were so sweet, and the one he got for Prim totally made me cry (because once you have a baby you’re a sensitive sappy mess about everything, apparently). He also got me a very fancy bunch of red roses, which are currently looking festive in the middle of the dining room table.

After breakfast and exchanging cards, we lounged around watching TV until Prim woke up, and then KC caught a nap while I fed Prim lunch and got her dressed for the day.

We decided to go on a walk together in the afternoon, so we strapped Prim into her stroller and headed toward downtown. Prim napped a bit and we got to chat about nothing (one of my absolute favorite things to do with KC). It was so nice and relaxing.

img_7267I hope that your weekend was everything you wanted it to be (and if you’re Prim, that means full of all the sweat pants strings to chew on.)

This Weekend Was

January 11, 2016

This weekend was so amazingly relaxing. On Saturday morning Prim woke up early (as usual) and KC was nice enough to go hang out with her while I slept in. I got up in time to put her down for her first nap, got her down, and then went back to bed. Yeah, I slept in and then took a nap. It was like, life-changing.

img_6720Prim has actually been sleeping pretty well lately, but the long-term sleep deprivation of having a baby really can take a toll after 6, 7, 8+ months of having your sleep interrupted every single night. But having a spouse who’s willing to step in and give me a little extra time in bed is so wonderful and really reinforces what a great husband KC is. (Thanks Kace! You’re my favorite.)

Much of the rest of the weekend was spent relaxing around the house — getting organized after the holidays and just enjoying the quiet together. KC and I started watching Making a Murderer on Netflix (because we’re apparently the only people on the planet who have not seen it yet), which was both fascinating and infuriating. (Being an attorney myself, I’m sort of well-aware of some of the short-comings of our justice system, but it’s still maddening to see those inadequacies blown up into epic proportions.) We’ve only finished the first 3 episodes, and even though I know the outcome (because, hello, I live out in the world and read the news) I still can’t wait to get back to it and finish up the series.

img_6801Another fun development from this weekend: Prim’s tutu pants! Prim has been outgrowing all her pants, and since capri pants don’t make a lot of sense in the dead of winter, I decided to go shopping for some new (longer!) pants to cover her poor ankles. And even though I try not to get too carried away into girl-land with Prim’s wardrobe, I just couldn’t resist these pants when I saw them at Gap.

img_6807 img_6769I mean, I might have to go back and get them in a second color because there’s just nothing cuter than some baby buns in a tutu.img_6774This little ham, I can’t get enough of her. Her big gummy smiles are going to be the death of me.

How was your weekend? Full of naps? I sure hope so.
