Place Your Bets!

May 8, 2019

We already know the gender of this little one thanks to an early blood test, but feel free to take a guess before we officially reveal the gender!

1. If you have morning sickness, it’s a girl.  If you don’t, it’s a boy.
I’ve been sick 24/7 since the first day of week 6, and while I don’t have HG this pregnancy (thank the Lord) I am very far from not having morning sickness.  Result: GIRL

2. If you crave sweets, it’s a girl.  Craving sour/salt?  It’s a boy.
I’ve been craving a weird assortment of things, including a burger very early on (not anymore, ew), deli sandwiches, pickles, and lots of candy. Result: BOY/GIRL

3. Use a Chinese Gender Predictor to predict the sex, based on your due date and birthday.
Based on my due date and birthday, the Chinese predictor says it’s a girl.  Result: GIRL

4. If the baby’s heartbeat is regularly above 140 bpm, it’s a girl.  Below 140 bpm — it’s a boy.
Baby’s heart rate was routinely above 140 at each of our doctor’s appointment.  Result: GIRL

5. If you prefer sleeping on your right side, it’s a girl.  If you gravitate towards the left, it’s a boy.
I have been mostly sleeping on my left side this pregnancy.  Result: BOY

6. If you’re extra moody, it’s a girl.  If you’re even-keeled, it’s a boy.
I haven’t been too moody this pregnancy (I don’t think…) KC might have a different opinion.  Result: BOY

7. If you’re clumsy, you’re having a boy.  Graceful as can be?  It’s a girl.
I haven’t been very clumsy lately. Result: GIRL

8. More headaches mean you’re having a boy, less means it’s a girl.
I’ve had a few more headaches recently, but this was while I was in Palm Springs where it was super hot and I was most likely not drinking enough water. Result: BOY

9. If your hands are soft, it’s a girl.  If they’re dry, it’s a boy.
My hands haven’t been very dry recently (my cuticles are a mess, but that’s a whole other life issue.)  Result: GIRL

10. If you’re carrying high, it’s a girl.  If your belly is low, it’s a boy.
Maybe it’s too early to tell this one, I don’t know, but I’ve been carrying on the lower side to this point.  Result: BOY

GIRL: 6 points  BOY: 5 points

Pregnancy Update — May

May 5, 2019

I am sloooowly getting out of the phase of all-the-time nausea/barfing. I’m still not feeling great and certainly not feeling like myself just yet, but the end is at least in sight and I have moments where I don’t want to just lay down and die, so it’s improving!

weeks: 14

baby’s size: orange

i’m feeling: mostly tired and barfy still, though this pregnancy hasn’t been nearly as bad as Lark’s was on the nausea front. I haven’t had to be on medication or hospitalized, so it feels infinitely more manageable — just crappy.

food love: pickles, sandwiches, and strawberries. Sometimes all together for lunch!

food hate: my food aversions have been a lot less pronounced this pregnancy. I’ve been able to eat meat (and sometimes even crave it!) which is a wholesale departure from my pregnancies with Prim and Lark where I couldn’t even THINK about anything other than white carbs in the first trimester.

3 pros for may: 1. The weather has been so nice lately — warm but not too hot, and it’s getting me really excited for all the summer barbecuing. 2. Prim’s birthday is this week — I can’t believe that this girl is going to be FOUR! Seems like just yesterday I was 14 weeks pregnant with her and thinking I looked SO pregnant (hahaha! Yeah right!) 3. I just took a girls trip to Palm Springs with some of my best mama friends — my first trip away from KC and the girls together — having the time away to relax and reconnect was amazing!

3 cons for may: 1. My nausea isn’t gone yet, nor is the crazy exhaustion of the first trimester, so I’m still not really feeling that great most days. Looking forward to hopefully feeling a little more normal in a few weeks. 2. The US medical system is proving to be a lot more annoying than the Netherlands one (shocker.) I constantly feel like I’m just a chart or another statistic at all these appointments, and fighting to have a “natural” pregnancy seems like it shouldn’t be this much work. 3. Sometimes I think about how much longer to go in this pregnancy and get really overwhelmed. Having been through this before somehow makes things both easier and harder because you kind of know what to expect.

currently living in: maternity dresses — so comfy and breathable. I mean, if I can pretty much avoid wearing pants altogether for the next 6 months I’ll call that a win.

looking forward to: the second trimester and a bit more energy.

dreaming about: naps and more naps.

Party of Five

May 1, 2019

If you follow me on social media or know me in real life, then you probably already know that I’m pregnant. Sorry, I guess that should say, I’m pregnant! Exclamation point!

And yes, we’re very excited (especially Prim). But also I’m very tired and just starting to emerge from the all-the-time barf-fest that is the first trimester (and beyond…) so summoning up the appropriate amount of hutzpah is sometimes a little challenging. But we’re excited! It’s happening!

The realness of the first trimester (i.e. wanting to fall down and die of tiredness and debilitating nausea most of the time) is the reason that my “announcement” photo is so far beyond planned, staged, or anything remotely professional. I mean, I’m wearing zero makeup, the room is a mess, the mirror is dirty… I guess the reality is I’m just not that committed to being that sort of “blogger” or “instagrammer” or whatever. That’s my real life right there — a phone selfie in a dirty mirror because “I guess I should just tell people since it’s so damn hard to hide this bump now.”

I mean, the third baby thing — wow. I started showing basically immediately (let’s sing a song about self esteem! And also a requiem for my ab muscles.) and I feel like I look about twice (or 14) times as pregnant as I actually am. (Sidenote: this mostly works in my favor on BART, where I give zero Fs about asking for a seat since I’ve been down this road twice before already.) Ah, the miracle of pregnancy, right? I’m sure I won’t be AT ALL tired of maternity clothes by the third trimester since I’ve been wearing the stuff pretty much since week six (facepalm).

This is all to say though, that really, we’re excited. I’m 99% sure this will be our last kiddo (I really don’t think I can go through a first trimester again), so it’s been a little bit easier to weather the hard parts knowing that this is most likely the last time I’ll be dealing with this. And honestly, the girls’ enthusiasm over having a sibling really makes the tough parts so much more enjoyable. Prim has been running around telling EVERYONE that she’s getting a new baby sister/brother (we already know!) and constantly running up to my belly to talk to and give kiss/hugs to the baby, so really, just give me a couple more weeks and I’ll probably be on board to have like 15 more kids. Ha!

Motherhood Update: Lark at 15 months

May 18, 2018

I’m a couple days late in posting about this little love, but we’re in full move-management mode right now, which has kind of taken over a lot of my brain.

Saying: Lark seems to be picking up new words on a daily basis right now. I am constantly surprised by the words coming out of her mouth (I recently tried counting the number of words she has but stopped when I got to 30). The way Lark talks is also so hilarious, because everything is sort of yelled like it’s an emergency. One of her favorite words is “bike” (of course, little Dutch child) and it seems like she’s constantly upset that she can’t ride the loopfiets yet because she’s always pointing at it and yelling “BIIIIKE!!”

Eating: Lark is still obsessed with Thai curry (girl ate two GIANT bowls of it last night), but her newest love is cereal. I introduced a fork and spoon at mealtime when she turned one, and she’s become very competent with both over the last three months. Since she wants to have everything Prim has, and Prim sometimes has cereal as part of her (very large) breakfast, Lark has gotten to try out her skills on Rice Krispies and Special K (the only non or low-sugar cereals they have here). She’s now regularly pointing at the boxes on the shelf and shouting “Eeeereal!” at me.

Sleeping: I recently weaned Lark, which ended up being a very easy transition. KC took over nap and bedtime duties while he was home over a long weekend and she slipped into the new routine without issue. This is the first time in 3 years and 8 months that I haven’t been pregnant and/or breastfeeding, so it’s been kind of strange and amazing to not be attached (literally or figuratively) to a baby for the first time in such a long time.

Doing: Lark is becoming more and more of a toddler each day. With all of her new words and skills, I find myself wondering where my baby went. She is very clearly the second child, as she wants EVERYTHING Prim has right now — toys, food, all of it. She also recently added “me too” to her vocabulary, which might just be the most second-child phrase of all time.

Latest milestone: Lark is walking assisted these days and can stand unassisted quite well. I have no doubt that should could walk if she wanted to, but just like Prim, she is clearly going to walk when she decides to — with no help or coaxing from us. Whenever you’re ready, girl!

Favorite toys: Lark has recently become OBSESSED with babies. Prim has two dolls — “big baby” and “little baby” — that she sleeps with and carries around often. Lark somehow wised up to these toys and would spend much of her day screaming “BABY!” and pointing to the dolls. After I heard her wake up from her nap screaming “BABY!” everyday for a week, I finally decided it was time to get her a doll of her own. She snuggles and kisses her baby, and I am honestly kind of dumbfounded at how baby-obsessed these two girls are. I haven’t tried to push dolls on them at all, but they are still just the sweetest little mamas to these babies of theirs.

Sweetest things: Lark has started giving “real” kisses recently, as opposed to the sweet, open-mouthed baby kisses. She will often climb into my lap, give me a big hug and then grab my face with both hands and kiss me. I’m sure she will be mortified someday to find out that she once liked kissing her mama on the mouth, but man do I love those sweet, drooly kisses.

Favorite thing about this age: Hearing Lark communicate what she wants has been so amazing (and helpful!) She seems to have finally transitioned out of the extremely clingy stage and is now exploring and playing more on her own. Seeing her crawl into the kitchen, point to the fridge and yell “CHEEEEESE!” or watching her crawl to the back door and scream out “POOL!” is so much nicer than the insistent but indecipherable shrieking she was doing just a couple of months ago. She seems to understand me more as well when I tell her that she needs to wait her turn or not do something (I mean, she’s not always happy about it, but she at least seems to understand it.)
